THE WATER WELLS PROJECT

In 1994, Kurt Dahlin led a team to Malawi to assess humanitarian opportunities. He was startled by the lack of fresh water available for the local villagers and the resulting disease and death. Frustrated by the situation, Kurt has spent the last 12 years working to correct it. In the last decade, with private donations and a partnership with native Malawians, WWFA has funded the building of nearly 100 wells most of which are still working. They return yearly to assess the condition of the wells and find strategic sites for building more. WWFA is an all-volunteer group with little overhead costs. That means the funds you raise go where they are meant to go— to the villagers. Simply put, 5000 dollars builds a well, and provides the education and tools necessary to use and maintain the well.

ABOUT MALAWI

In Malawi only 37% of the population has access to safe water that is located within one kilometer. Additionally, in many cases where the government or other organizations have previously improved water supply sources, these sources have since broken down due to lack of maintenance and an effective transfer of knowledge and responsibilities to the local community.
Malawi's difficult water supply situation, coupled with the poor sanitation and hygiene habits of rural communities has made water borne diseases a common and often deadly occurrence. Access to safe water reduces the scourge of water borne diseases and eases the burden on women and girls in rural communities.
